WJ Architects is Celebrating 30 Years and the Grand Opening of their New Headquarters on Mirror Lake on Thursday, May 25.
WJ Architects (WJA) is an interdisciplinary architecture firm that creates engaging spaces for working, living, learning and playing. In 1992, Lisa Wannemacher and Mike Russell founded Wannemacher Russell Architects in St. Petersburg. Jason Jensen, who was born and raised in St. Pete, joined the firm in 2002 after gaining experience in New York. In 2008, the firm name changed to Wannemacher Jensen Architects and this year is celebrating 30 years!
The firm’s design methodology is centered on the belief that architecture can inspire positive change and enrich society. With each project and any given set of challenges, they strive to provide creative design solutions that promote community and client ambitions, redefine conventions, and generate purpose driven solutions.
"The support and encouragement I receive from fellow entrepreneurs, as well as organizations like the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, are instrumental in establishing a business here. St. Petersburg fosters a spirit of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurialism, making it the perfect place." -Jason Jensen
Aside from Architecture and Interior Design, WJ Architects has a unique combination of in-house construction and development capabilities, WJ Create and WJ Developers. Unlike other architectural firms that primarily focus on design and planning, WJ Architects has taken a holistic approach by integrating construction and development services within its core operations. This comprehensive approach allows the firm to have complete control over the entire project lifecycle, from initial concept and design to construction and final delivery. By having construction expertise in-house, WJ Architects ensures seamless coordination between the design and construction phases, resulting in streamlined communication, efficient project management, and timely execution.
Additionally, the firm's in-house development team adds further value by offering insights into the financial and market aspects of projects, enabling them to create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also economically viable and market-responsive. This integrated approach distinguishes WJ Architects and empowers them to deliver exceptional architectural solutions that seamlessly integrate design, construction, and development considerations.
Why St. Pete?
WJA's decision to start the business in St. Petersburg was a decision rooted in both practicality and passion. From a practical standpoint, St. Petersburg has a thriving business environment, with a diverse range of industries and a supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurs. The city's strategic location, excellent infrastructure, and strong economic growth made it an ideal place. However, it was the city's unique charm and vibrant energy that truly captured the heart. St. Petersburg offers a perfect blend of urban sophistication and a laid-back coastal lifestyle. The beautiful beaches, picturesque waterfront, and vibrant downtown atmosphere create an irresistible allure. Additionally, the sense of community and collaboration among local businesses is exceptional. St. Petersburg fosters a spirit of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit, making it the perfect place.
