Nauti-Birds & Critters: A Journey from Corporate to Creative

Get to Know Debbie and Keith: The Talented Duo Behind Nauti-Birds & Critters

In the heart of St. Petersburg, Florida, where the vibrant art scene thrives, we find Nauti-Birds, a unique art venture run by Debbie and Keith. Their journey from corporate life to full-time artists is both inspiring and fascinating, reflecting a deep passion for creativity and community.

Debbie and Keith were both entrenched in the corporate world for many years. However, their shared love for art led them to make a bold move—transitioning to full-time artists. Their initial venture, Potty Mouth Design, focused on t-shirts and on-demand events. This eventually evolved into something extraordinary: crafting birds out of PVC pipes. It was a combination of skill, luck, and an entrepreneurial spirit that saw them buy a business and transform it into the vibrant Nauti-Birds & Critters.

The Art of Creating These Nauti-Birds

Every piece created by Nauti-Birds starts with a 10-foot 4-inch PVC pipe. Keith hand-cuts and shapes these pipes. This turns them into unique bird sculptures. Debbie then brings these sculptures to life with her painting skills, giving each bird a name and a birthday. These artworks are mounted on Florida Cypress bases. Florida Cypress is known for their rot and bug resistance, making them perfect for outdoor display.

Beyond birds, Nauti-Birds offers a delightful array of critters, including geckos, axolotls, woodpeckers, turtles, frogs, bubble bees, ducks, mermaids, and more. Each piece is spray-painted by hand, with colors and names that Debbie thoughtfully chooses as she works on them.

One of the most delightful aspects of Nauti-Bird is the community’s bond. Customers are thrilled read the names of the birds, often finding personal connections or nicknames that resonate. Debbie and Keith enjoy these interactions, drawing inspiration and motivation from the joy and stories of their customers.

Debbie and Keith are passionate about art and its importance in St. Petersburg. Our city, famous for its art scene, murals, and cultural embrace, provides the perfect place for Nauti-Birds. They’ve even created birds for awards, such as the Member of the Year for us, The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, and for local organizations, showcasing their art’s flexibility and impact.
